The Clap
Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL) has allowed Spotify (NYSE: SPOT) users the option to pay directly for a subscription, rather than through Google Play payments.
Backstory
On Google Play & Apple’s App Store, app developers can’t take credit card numbers directly from users. Instead, they have to bill users through Google’s or Apple’s system, which takes at least 15%, & as much as 30%, of total sales.
Why this matters
The move put pressure on Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), which consistently said it is against third-party billing. However, the move by Google is still a trial, & only Spotify so far will be given this feature, & it will still pay Google a certain fee for this feature.
