Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman initiated the plan for the new King Salman International Airport in Riyadh, to be built by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), with the aim of making the city a global destination for transport, trade, and tourism.
What
King Salman Airport will be one of the largest airports in the world, extending over 57 square kilometers.
The airport will include current halls, 6 flight runways, 12 square kilometers of supporting facilities, residential and recreational assets, shops, and many logistical facilities.
The New Airport
The new airport will support KSA’s plans, to make Riyadh among the ten largest cities in the world, keeping up with the growth in the population of the capital, which aims to reach between 15 to 20 million people by 2030.
So What
The announcement of the plan for King Salman International Airport is in line with the PIF and the National Transport Strategy for transportation and logistics and the national initiative for global supply chains and supports the country’s efforts in diversifying the economy.
Now What
The project is expected to bring around SAR 27 billion annually to the Saudi non-oil economy and to create 103,000 direct and indirect job opportunities, in line with KSA’s goals in the Vision 2030 initiative.
